Yerevan is the capital of the Republic of Armenia and the largest habitat at the same time. It is one of the ancient cities in the world. It is located on the bank of the river Hrazdan, which is the stream of the river Araks. Yerevan is the most important transport junction as well as the political, economical, cultural and scientific center. The city has two airports. The Underground of Yerevan has been working since 1981.
The name of Yerevan originates from the name of the Urartian fortress Erebuni. It has had a status of the capital city since 1918 being the 12th capital in the history of Armenia.
The building of the present Yerevan as a capital of Armenian country began in 1924 by the main project of the famous architect Alexander Tamanyan.
